Tor
Also known as: tor browser, onion routing
A network that anonymises traffic by bouncing it through three encrypted relays run by volunteers.
Tor wraps each request in three layers of encryption and sends it through a random path of three relays; only the final one talks to the destination, and no single relay knows both the source and the target. The Tor Browser adds fingerprint uniformity so users look identical to each other.
Tor is slower than a VPN and blocked or throttled by some sites, but it provides much stronger anonymity guarantees. It's used by journalists, activists, whistleblowers and anyone whose threat model includes powerful adversaries.
